I give credit to President Tinubu for not illegally interfering in the Osun State governorship election that held yesterday - maybe they are under pressure from influential people like Davido, who used their platforms to draw global attention to the election. Or maybe because of a pact between the two - a second-term ambition that removed "do or die"... I just saw a video where Governor Adeleke endorsed President Tinubu for a second term.
Whatever, the election appears to be generally fair with a few skirmishes here and there. If we continue to practice democracy this way, the people (at least during general elections) will be able to choose their leaders... Politicians will start to behave in office when they realize the power to win an election belongs to the people and not them through intimidation, rigging, and vote manipulation... I hope he will let the Oyo governorship election go the same way next year...
I was having a conversation with my 15-year-old son yesterday about doing chores. He told me he naturally forgets to do them. The discussion reached a point where I reiterated to him why it is natural for him to forget - that it is because there is either no direct benefit to him or there are no consequences when he fails to do them... I told him, next weekend if he naturally forgets to do the chores, I will naturally take his phone, his most precious possession.... I am so sure he will remember to do the chores; otherwise, his phone will be under lock and key for a week.
The point is that leaders cannot naturally be stealing public funds - this has been the case in Nigeria and in many countries where the people do not have the opportunity and power to show them the door.
In my 22 years of junketing around the world, I have come to realize that human beings are the same everywhere... where you see a difference are places where justice prevails... where people know they cannot escape justice - be it from the law of the land or at the polls...
One other important point was that the turnout was fair also... better than the last governorship election... it was 43%... 1.005 million voted against 2.340 million registered voters... While this is a better number, we need close to 75% turnout for the people to truly rule... I said it before: when people come out to vote, it is difficult to rig...
I just came back from Nigeria . I traversed the length and breadth of the nation a bit in my three-week stay. Something is different about the country compared to when I visited last year.... The people are more desperate... Hunger has increased astronomically.... The gap between the haves and have-nots has further widened... You feel impunity in the air... You see police collecting bribes openly like we have not seen since the Shagari era in 1983... There are more law enforcement agents on the roads now, yet the crime rate has not abated... You see VIO , Road Safety, State Law enforcers, the Police, everywhere mounting illegal roadblocks... I heard things from those close to the seat of power about those who hold the reins of power, and I weep for Nigeria - it is beyond disheartening... Projects are being abandoned because a significant portion has been given as bribes to government officials like governors and ministers, including major monarchs - they all collect money for projects...
