Sim Card Registration and the NIN Registration Palaver - Is Nigeria Under A Dictatorship?

I think the NIN Sim card registration in Nigeria is a joke. Even with the extended deadline, this still does not make sense. Register 50 million Nigerians in 2 weeks who do not have NIN when NIMC, the organization responsible for National ID registration has not registered this many people in 8 years. Who did we offend that make us do things like this in 2021? Who does the president surround himself with giving him this type of idea that he can just issue an illegal law to force Nigerians in a democracy to get their phone registered in two weeks or lose their phone access - Illegal, illegal, illegal. These are other reason why this does not make sense:   1. In the midst of a deadly pandemic, how does a government with leaders that care send their people out to queue in a super-spreader event at NIMC offices to get registered?   2. What provision is made for the elderly, to get their national ID and then their sim card registered?   3. What provision is made for Nigerians...

Igangan, Fulani herdsmen and Sunday Igboho's Saga - How Buhari Failed Nigerians

E fi epo s'ile ehun pa lapa lapa. Instead of removing the weeds, you are removing a vegetable that looks like a weed. This is the situation with Fulani community in Igangan and Ondo, in the South Western part of Nigeria for that matter. Violent acts should be dealt with at every level, starting from the Fulanis who kill and maim innocent Nigerians, then locals who go around fomenting troubles. Nobody should be spared. The Lame-duck government of Buhari should not ignore the cry of the people of Nigeria when they are shouting for rescue from the hands of his kinsmen. He should not wait till Fulanis are being attacked before he acts. He did the same in 2019 at the height of Fulani mayhem in the Western part of Nigeria, from Kebbi to Yewa in Ogun State. Instead of arresting the insecurity situation in Nigeria, especially, the insurrection of SOME Fulani herdsmen in the South Western part of Nigeria, governments (state and federal) are threatening the people who decided to take laws ...

How to prevent memory loss - a common occurrence as one grows older, especially after you turn 50. GASLIGHTING

May God save us from those possessed by the spirit of "GASLIGHTING". Those who practice it are the most insidious type of people. Many have falling a victim of their antics, even those that supposed to know left from right. Here are some of their traits:   1. They have one goal, to take control of your mind and life 2. They tell blatant lies to your face. 3. They deny reality even when there is physical evidence to prove they are lying - familiar? 4. Their goal is to wear you down and take control of your thought and you are incapable of telling a truth from a lie or able to know left from your right. Familiar, "there are good people on both sides" of a group publicly spitting hate. 5. Do not ever trust their word because their actions never match their words. Focus more on what they are doing and assess them based on these. 6. Every now and then, they throw in shades of positive comments to confuse you about their antics. They have a Ph.D. in manipulation. 7. The...

Lessons from COVID-19 lockdown for the Academia

Pre-COVID-19, many academics were being pushed by university administrators to begin to consider online classes and many were hesitant because they questioned the effectiveness of delivering lectures online. So many universities were pushing hard for professors to consider the online domain as it was obvious that it is a new market to capture extra resources for the traditional academic institutions that were facing severe cash strap. Platforms such as Coursera.org, edX.org, udemy.com, etc. have proven that it is possible to deliver content online with a huge audience and following, and with great success. Top universities have several classes and courses on these platforms - some are offered for free, some are paid-view and some are offered at a discounted rate to students from low-income countries, and some even have complete degree package they offer to students thousands of kilometers away. Online students are finding values by receiving qualitative education from top institut...

What does democracy mean in the Nigerian context?

The word "democracy", just like many English words emanated from the Greek word "demos-kratia", which means "the people rules". The big question is, are we practicing democracy in Nigeria or "demon-crazy" just as Fela alluded to? From political party primaries to local, state, and national elections, what we see is selection, imposition, and rigging of a monumental level. Godfatherism is an integral part of our political system - what is the difference between godfatherism and autocratic military rule? When the wish and will of the people is subverted by a few greedy people who think the rest of us are idiots and stupid, so, they can continue to decide for us. This is a culture that our people learned from the colonial masters but the master never practiced godfatherism like we do because of democracy - they have power brokers and people who lobby, and these people are not perpetual rulers and their power is checked by free and fair election. Man...

How do you approach relationship - transactional or relational?

Our success in life is dependent on the relationships we build. The critical question is how do you approach a relationship, are you transactional or relational? You often hear the current POTUS say, "in our transaction with them", "they say beautiful things about us", "we gave them so much, now we have stopped because they did not say beautiful things about us", etc. A relationship built on "what can I get from you in return for what I do for you". This is common with rich people when they have money, they have many friends, when they do not have things to share again, even close friends desert them - they become a loner. Many marriages have fallen apart because they are transactional - when she is beautiful, she is my choice, when she grows wrinkles, I find me a new young beautiful one to replace her OR when he has money, he is mine, when he can no longer give the gifts, I find me another husband. Success in business or politics is often dete...
