There are corrupt people in every country all over the world... The United States used to be an example of how to effectively deal with corruption... This used to set the US apart in the past because if you are caught, you are sentenced to a long time in prison... no wealth, no political influence or affiliation will save you... You will serve your time and carry the burden for the rest of your life.
I am afraid that is no longer the case.... We see felons who have defrauded people of their hard-earned money being set free and their criminal records erased, left, right, front, and back. We see criminals who have killed many Americans through their drug cartel connections being set free. What is going on here...? How can we get back to a time where fear of long time in jail is a deterrent to swindling people of their hard-earned money or of being engaged in drug-related crimes, and all sorts ... There is no longer an example or motivation for countries in places like Africa and South America where corruption is endemic to want to stamp it out if the excellent example people cite all the time is no longer there...
Omoyele Sowore, a prominent opposition politician in Nigeria, will say (paraphrasing), "If you want your corruption records to be wiped out, join the ruling party." It does not matter which party is in power... join them, say good things about them, and that case will disappear... One of the reasons why corruption continues to destroy the fabric of Nigerian society and the country continues to lag behind in spite of its rich resources, which include some of the best minds in the world.
This should be concerning to any American who wants a safe society that is rid of criminals. What we see now is that rich criminals are being set free, while mostly poor ones rot in jail...
I just came back from Nigeria . I traversed the length and breadth of the nation a bit in my three-week stay. Something is different about the country compared to when I visited last year.... The people are more desperate... Hunger has increased astronomically.... The gap between the haves and have-nots has further widened... You feel impunity in the air... You see police collecting bribes openly like we have not seen since the Shagari era in 1983... There are more law enforcement agents on the roads now, yet the crime rate has not abated... You see VIO , Road Safety, State Law enforcers, the Police, everywhere mounting illegal roadblocks... I heard things from those close to the seat of power about those who hold the reins of power, and I weep for Nigeria - it is beyond disheartening... Projects are being abandoned because a significant portion has been given as bribes to government officials like governors and ministers, including major monarchs - they all collect money for projects...
