New tariffs and new taxation can only be justified when the economic situation in Nigeria improves. Otherwise, they will compound an already bad situation for the average Nigerian. Nigeria is not Lagos... The majority of poor Nigerians can not bear the burden of recovery due to the reckless behavior of a few....
The burden of recovery MUST be borne by those who have benefited from the largess of the past - rich Nigerians, corporations who make so much - oil companies, Banks, organizations like the telecom companies... They MUST pay their fair share... Entertainers - many Nigerian celebrities (musicians, actors, creative artists, etc.) do not pay a dim in tax/ pay the bare minimum, and they rake in millions/billions every year in local and foreign earnings. The likes of Burna Boy, Davido, Charlie Boy, P-Square, Dbanj, Tiwa, Funke Akindele, Arya Starr, Don Jazzy, Rema, Asake, Wizkid, Toyin Abraham, Mofe-Damijo, Kunle Afolayan with all his Netflix millions, etc. It is high time Nigeria started to tax preachers who collect special offerings from their members aside from their salary. Preachers who make millions in selling merchandise and spiritual supplies to their members need to pay tax - VAT and investment income. Many rich Nigerians dodge paying their taxes because there is no effective way to monitor, catch, and punish defaulters. With NIN, it should be easy to catch those not paying their dues. Tax codes in Nigeria need overhauling to reflect our current situation and what works for... that is, what will not put an unnecessary burden on poor Nigerians... Nigerians who could choose to have breakfast in Abuja, lunch in London, and dinner in Abu Dabi should pay their fair share.
These are the people that need to be taxed. It should not be Iya Ramota alata in Sabo, or Hajia Amina the onion seller, or Chioma the farmer that should be pressured to pay more in taxes and tariffs.
I just came back from Nigeria . I traversed the length and breadth of the nation a bit in my three-week stay. Something is different about the country compared to when I visited last year.... The people are more desperate... Hunger has increased astronomically.... The gap between the haves and have-nots has further widened... You feel impunity in the air... You see police collecting bribes openly like we have not seen since the Shagari era in 1983... There are more law enforcement agents on the roads now, yet the crime rate has not abated... You see VIO , Road Safety, State Law enforcers, the Police, everywhere mounting illegal roadblocks... I heard things from those close to the seat of power about those who hold the reins of power, and I weep for Nigeria - it is beyond disheartening... Projects are being abandoned because a significant portion has been given as bribes to government officials like governors and ministers, including major monarchs - they all collect money for projects...
