It is disheartening when you read about young people in Nigeria dying from mysterious ailments. This speaks volumes about the state of healthcare delivery in the country.... it is practically non-existent for poor and middle-class Nigerians. .. Hospitals have been Undertaker houses for decades and successive governments have done nothing to help the situation.... People die of sicknesses that will cost a few hundreds or thousands of naira to treat... where are those hospitals, where are the doctors and nurses (most of them have left and some are boarding the plane as I am writing to leave), and where are the supplies to treat, where is the ethics - many are prioritizing money above their oath, where is the compensation for healthcare workers, where are the modern equipment, where is the power to keep the hospitals afloat, where are other utilities.....?
There is a deep connection between access to qualitative healthcare and the prosperity of a nation. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce.. investment in the healthcare system can add trillions of naira to the Nigerian economy yearly.... The power that be, if they truly want to lead an enduring change, they need to revamp and modernize our healthcare system. sometimes, it is not because poor people cannot afford it, it is because it is not available at all or the quality is abysmal....
Life expectancy in Nigeria remains one of the lowest among countries with similar economic size. 53 years.... That is why less than 10% of the Nigerian population is above the age of 65. Our people die like chickens before they attain the age of full wisdom.... in the West, they are called SENIORS and the welfare support system for this class is enormous....
I hope "change" will truly come to Nigeria and Nigerians in my lifetime....
I just came back from Nigeria . I traversed the length and breadth of the nation a bit in my three-week stay. Something is different about the country compared to when I visited last year.... The people are more desperate... Hunger has increased astronomically.... The gap between the haves and have-nots has further widened... You feel impunity in the air... You see police collecting bribes openly like we have not seen since the Shagari era in 1983... There are more law enforcement agents on the roads now, yet the crime rate has not abated... You see VIO , Road Safety, State Law enforcers, the Police, everywhere mounting illegal roadblocks... I heard things from those close to the seat of power about those who hold the reins of power, and I weep for Nigeria - it is beyond disheartening... Projects are being abandoned because a significant portion has been given as bribes to government officials like governors and ministers, including major monarchs - they all collect money for projects...
