A friend shared a video of a rally held by Biafra supporters in Montreal Canada. It was a big crowd of young and old of our brothers and sisters from South Eastern part of Nigeria. This set me thinking. I am of the opinion that this is a very sensitive issue, and i respectfully provide my opinion to my fellow Nigerians, especially those from South Eastern part of the country.
I have no issue with South Eastern brothers and sisters in Nigeria agitating for autonomy and independence. They better be careful for what they are requesting for - theirs is the only region in Nigeria that look less like an integrated country. It is very difficult for anybody who is none Igbo to succeed in the PUBLIC sector in SE if you are not an Igbo man. You find it hard to get job in their government, public schools and they have the least population of other Nigerians living among them aside from the Hausas who sell ppeper and onions to them at Sabo. The reasons are not far fetch. If they leave Nigeria, they better know they will loose free access to the rest of the country like Lagos and Abuja. They will need visa to come to Lagos, they will need business visa to maintain business empire all over - that is if the rest of Nigeria allows them the kind of opportunity they have all over the country at all. They dominate the rest of the nation in spare part , clothing and electronic business, including pharmaceutical. They have been given opportunity to grow in the rest of the country in a way they have not allowed others in their land, especially their presence South West - they have produced Speaker of the house in Oyo State, legislators, commissioners all over SW - it is difficult to name one none Igbo man who has been made a speaker or legislator in any SE state.
One other facts is that there is no guarantee that Rivers, Cross-river, Akwa-Ibom and Bayelsa states will go with Biafra. This will make Biafra a landlocked country that needs to pay royalty to Nigeria to ship goods across to their states. My take is that it is easier for Biafra to remain part of Nigeria and agitate for greater influence at the center than to secede. They need to build trust - have they asked themselves why they have never being in the opposition since the nation Nigeria came into existence in 1960. They always shift to the side of the ruling party - SE Nigeria was predominantly PDP for 16 years until 2015. Today, most SE politicians have left to become APC member. How do they think they will ever get the plum job at the center if they continue to run after every power that be.
