Tithing in the new Testament - What the Bible Says.

The fundamental question many Christians ask today is that: Is it mandatory to pay tithe today? Here is my position based on biblical facts from the New Testament.
Where is it written that Jesus commanded tithe? Nor where is it written anywhere in the New Testament that tithing was mentioned? The proclamation in the New Testament is about the people GIVING OF FREE WILL and ACCORDING TO THE NEED OF THE CHURCH.

This is one of the account you read in the New Testament:
“2 Corinthians 8:3, For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,…..”
1 Corinthians 16:2, On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a portion of his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be needed.”
2 Corinthians 9:7, "...for God loves a cheerful giver."

The account you will read in the book of ACTS 4 & 5 is that, in the first church, Christians agreed to give 100% of all they had so that no one will be in need. Not 10%, because 10% would not be enough in that situation. Putting a percentage on giving is recipe for shady stuff to start happening. Why did God not give us gifts equally? He gave us what we are made for – what he expects is 100% effort like the parable of the talent. This is part of the wisdom that came with the tearing of the veil of the temple – we are no longer under the law, our conscience is so important in our individual dealing with God. Those who could afford to give 40% because there is a need for 40% in the local assembly and are giving 1%, they shall account. God knows their number. Those who could only afford to give 5% and are giving 5.5%, He knows also – the widow’s mite!
Jesus described a parable of the Widow’s Mites to show that when you give sacrificially, there is a reward. Do not withhold your resources when there is genuine need (feeding the poor, caring for the widow or widower or orphan, or the sick, etc.; not to buy a new plane or suit for the man of God, or to build a gigantic building to suit the ego of a man who lays claims to it as his achievement). Giving should be according to the need of the church (people/members) today and people should be allowed to give of their free will according to the tenet of the New Testament. If this is enforced in Nigerian churches, a lot of churches will close shop because these greedy, fake men of God will soon realize there is nothing to prey on.
The position of God in the New Testament was shown when Jesus asked his disciples to observe with Him how people were giving to the treasury in the Temple. If tithe was important, he would have reiterate it at that point.

Mark 12:41-44: “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.  They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Anyone who disagree with me should not just argue, but provide me ONE scripture in the New Testament where tithing was emphasized. If you cannot, case is closed.

THE GREATEST ASSET EVER – LAND “Every time I make a movie, I buy a LAND” – Tiffany Haddish (Actress, Comedian, Singer, and Producer). If you do not know yet, I announce to you that the greatest asset that will give you an assured return, whose value hardly depreciates, is LANDED property . Reflect on the major wars going on right now in the world that are predicated on the issue of LAND. WHY? It is one of the GEM God endows humanity with that is finite in quantity. While the human population continues to increase, land area remains the same or is diminishing due to climate change. The Russia's war in Ukraine , the Gaza war , the DRC-M23 war/Rwanda , Sudan's civil war , the Cambodia–Thai war , herdsmen-farmers' violence in Nigeria and the Ethiopian civil war … all are predicated on access to land and what is in it – rare earth minerals . So, in 2026 , if you have the opportunity to invest in an asset, think about landed property.

WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO EXTREMELY GOOD PEOPLE

There is a saying in my language, Yoruba , that “Igi to ba to, kii pe n’gbo” – meaning, the good ones do not seem to last or live long. WHY? Tatiana Schlossberg, granddaughter of John F Kennedy (The U.S. President who championed the civil rights movement to end discrimination; one of the greatest U.S. presidents ever) and daughter of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , passed away today from cancer at a young age of 35. Like her grandfather and many others in the Kennedy family, she dedicated her life to changing the world. She was a passionate environmental journalist for the New York Times and wrote a book titled "Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have” in 2019 that won the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020. Her life’s work sheds light on how individuals’ daily activities and choices exacerbate climate change issues . Tatiana Schlossberg's work focused on making complex environmental issue...
